There are some great books about Fertility Awareness. (See links & resources section.) If you work with me, I may recommend that you read one of these books. Can you learn this material solely from a book? Sure. You can also learn yoga, and how to speak a foreign language, solely from a book. There are times when personal instruction is important. A book cannot offer you feedback, or answer your questions. Personal instruction can make you feel much more confident about using Fertility Awareness to avoid pregnancy. If you are trying to become pregnant, I can tell you if your charts look ok, if you are timing intercourse correctly, and if anything seems to look problematic. In short, I can offer you a depth of understanding and practical, down-to-earth advice that you cannot get from a book. I love this material, and I want to help you get the most out of it.

Workshops

Private Consultations
Private consultations can be done in person, or by telephone, or with Skype, making them appropriate both for New Yorkers, as well as those who live elsewhere. Private consultations can cover any topic related to Fertility Awareness, such as:
Using the method confidently and effectively for contraception.
Using the method to gain insight into your gynecological and overall health and well-being.
Using the method to achieve pregnancy. Whether you are just thinking about getting pregnant, or whether you have been trying for a while, I have a unique, holistic approach to pregnancy achievement that includes the principles of mind/body medicine. Mind/body medicine considers the profound effects that emotions, thoughts, beliefs, etc. can have on physical health. I will help you get the most out of your charting, so that you can see if you are ovulating regularly, if you are timing intercourse correctly, and if there are health issues that may be interfering with your ability to conceive and/or carry a pregnancy to term.
Managing fertility after birth. Avoiding pregnancy with FAM while breastfeeding is a slightly different animal than regular FAM. It's best if you can learn the basics before the baby comes, and even better if you have practiced Fertility Awareness before you got pregnant, but I can work with you at any stage. The session on post-partum fertility usually lasts about one hour. Short "support sessions" are often done after the baby comes, especially around milestones in the baby's life (e.g. eating solid food, sleeping through the night) which can trigger changes in your fertile status.

Lectures
Ilene has given talks at: Bluestockings, Realbirth, Brooklyn College, The Continuum Center for Health and Healing, Downtown Women Ob/Gyn, Providence Day Spa, NY Presbyterian/Columbia Family Medicine residency program, the 55th Annual Meeting of ACNM, and for Suzanne Connole's acupuncture group and the New York chapter of Attachment Parenting International. Ilene also teaches at Om Wellness. Talks can be geared toward health care professionals or laypeople, and topics vary depending on audience. Typical topics are "An Introduction to Fertility Awareness" and "How FA Can Benefit Your Patients." If your group, health care practice, school or wellness facility would be interested in sponsoring a talk on these or related topics, please get in touch.
Instruction If You Live Elsewhere
If you live outside the New York area and would like to learn Fertility Awareness, you have several options.
Phone Consults
As noted above, it is entirely possible to work with me by phone or by Skype. Phone consults are $85 an hour, prorated according to actual time spent.

FAN
The Fertility Awareness Network is a professional organization for secular (non-religious) teachers of FA. I am currently the coordinator. If you are out of the New York area and are interested in exploring more of your options for learning FA (or Natural Family Planning, NFP, which is similar to FA but grounded in Catholic values), FAN has an information packet that may be of use to you.
