Can I learn FA from a book or from the internet?

While Fertility Awareness (FA) is not terribly difficult to learn, in order to be effective for the prevention of pregnancy, it must be learned completely accurately and thoroughly. (See FAQ on effectiveness.) It is said that Fertility Awareness is unforgiving. When used consistently and correctly, it works extremely well. But if you make a mistake, nature may correct you. Professional instruction can be the key to achieving a highly effective FA practice. Moreover, it can help you (and your relationship partner, if you have one) feel more confident about not using the more familiar  methods of birth control. For some of us, it’s a pretty big leap!

There are a few excellent books about Fertility Awareness, and if you work with me, I will recommend that you read one of those books, as a starting point. Books provide solid background information, but don’t identify your problem areas, answer your questions, or give you feedback about your practice. That’s where instruction comes in. As for material on the internet, my advice is to be very, very careful. There are innumerable places where one can find FA advice and instruction, but in most cases, the people giving that advice are not trained in this field, and the advice given is not reliable. Many people enjoy the support and camaraderie that those online forums provide, but if you are serious about preventing pregnancy, I would not recommend taking advice about your FA practice from strangers on the internet.
